Resume and Reference Sheet

Good morning, Eighth Graders!  It is time to finish your resume (25 points) and your reference sheet (optional; five more points; NOT extra credit).  All of the directions that you need to do well are on this one web page.  Go over this page carefully, and take your time on your resume.  Would somebody want to interview you because of your resume?
Resume Directions:

1.  Write out your resume on a white piece of paper.  Follow my guidelines (see my example of a resume).  There are MANY different ways to do a resume, but I want you to follow this common example.

2.  Create a new Word document.  Set all margins at
.75 inch.  Set a left tab one inch from the left margin.

3.  Key your resume carefully.  I will be looking for correct spelling, good grammar, an easy-to-read font, an attractive layout (cannot be over one page), and I want to see how well you can follow directions.  Keep in mind, borders usually are not included on a resume.  Do not add one.

4.  At least one of your two sections of "Profile" and "Extracurricular Activities" must have bullets.  You will have to move your bullets to the one inch mark to create a straight line of information.

5.  Use bold headings.  You may need to cut some information if your resume is longer than a page.  You may need to add some information if you don't quite have a page full of material.

6.  The only thing that should be centered on your resume is your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address.

7.  Check the Print Preview and print.  Turn in your printed copy along with your first draft (white piece of paper).

8.  Have fun and be creative!!!

Reference Sheet Directions:

1.  This reference sheet is optional.  If you want an "A", do it.  If you don't have time or don't care about your grade (that would be sad), then you'll have to pass on this sheet.  One thing to keep in mind is that this is EASY to do!

2.  Your heading should be centered and look exactly like your resume's heading.  You could even copy and paste your heading from your resume.

3.  Think of three or four people that would say good things about you and your work ethic.  You do not have to put their correct addresses and phone numbers.

4.  Put each name in a different box after making a table (Table...Insert...Table...2 columns...2 rows...hit "OK"...hide the border of the table before printing (see me for help with this step).  Get rid of the border lines.  Do this by selecting the entire table, hitting "Format", going to "Borders and Shading", selecting the "None" box, and hitting "OK".

5.  Check the Print Preview and print. Turn in with your resume and rough draft.

6.  See, that wasn't so difficult!

(Note: This is not a very good example of the reference sheet..  It looks different on a web page, but it should be somewhat helpful.  See me if you'd like a hard copy of the reference sheet.)
